Chickens on the loose

A third of our chickens and two of the roosters have escaped their pen and are ranging freely through the calf barn.

I'd be lying if I said I felt comfortable with that, since the last time we gave them the run of the place, a fox killed nearly every one just for fun, not for food.  Dan herded them all back in the pen, but a dozen flew right back out.

They may be getting ready to molt (that should reduce the flying); there has been a reduction in the amount of eggs they are laying, which could mean that by the time farmer's market starts they will be looking sorry and using all their egg-laying energy to grow new feathers.  I surely hope not.
